Dunshaughlin village is less than 30 minutes from the centre of Dublin via the M3 and is an ideal introduction to the historic Royal County of Meath.
Domhnach Seachnaill, meaning the Church of Seachnall, takes its name from St Seachnall, who established a church or abbey here in the fifth century. He is believed to have been a relative of St Patrick. Because of its close proximity to Dublin and Navan, Dunshaughlin has long been a focal point of political, cultural and administrative history.
Today, it is a thriving modern village with a growing population, while retaining a rich and varied heritage. The community takes great pride in preserving its built heritage and sharing Dunshaughlin's wealth of local history, myths and legends.
Community spirit and pride of place remain as strong as ever in Dunshaughlin. On Sunday, 16 August 2026, at 3pm, members of the Dunshaughlin & District Historical Society invite you to join them for a guided walking tour of the village.
The tour will start from Dunshaughlin Pastoral Centre (A85 W886), behind St Patrick's and St Seachnall's Church, and will take approximately 90 minutes. The walk will conclude with refreshments and a chat at the Pastoral Centre.
This tour is ideal for anyone who has recently moved to the area, residents who would like to learn more about their village, and visitors wishing to gain an insight into Irish history. Discover stories spanning generations, from St Patrick and the Hill of Tara to the Croppy Boys, the events of 1916, and much more.
