Walk, Weave and Wonder: Explore Shannon Town Community Wetlands

Join us at Shannon Town Community Wetlands for a guided walk and talk by Ruairí Ó Conchúir of the Local Authority Waters Programme. We will explore the vital role that wetlands play in protecting our natural and cultural heritage. As part of Heritage Week 2026, and in keeping with this year's theme, "Heritage at Risk," we will discover how wetlands help mitigate climate change by storing carbon, reducing flood risk, improving water quality, and supporting a rich diversity of wildlife.

The event will also feature a basket weaving demonstration by Michael Foudy, master basket weaver, showcasing the heritage craft of weaving with natural materials such as willow. This hands-on display will highlight the longstanding connection between people and wetlands, where locally grown materials have been sustainably harvested and crafted for centuries.

During the walk, participants will learn about the history and ecological importance of the Shannon Town Community Wetlands, the threats facing wetland habitats, and the actions communities can take to help conserve these invaluable landscapes for future generations.
