Join us for a special lunch-time screening of Anne Maree Barry's Leisure with Dignity, followed by a Q&A with Anne Maree herself. This event is running in conjunction with our 'Homesick' exhibition, which features the recipe book belonging to Countess Aldborough. This recipe book, featuring recipes for preserves, pickles and cheese also lists various medicines and cures. Anne Maree consulted this, among other materials, while researching for Leisure with Dignity
Leisure with Dignity combines the artists’ own psychogeographic walking tours of the 'Monto' area in Dublin, to create a film that reflects historical events while at the same time presenting a complex portrait of female empowerment. Four characters : Madam May Oblong, Kitty D, Countess Aldborough and The Custom House establish a dialogue between locality, history, architecture, and the independence of women in a specific time.
“Barry’s richly atmospheric film is a clear-headed, unsentimental and subtle mediation on the lives women (in the Monto) could negotiate for themselves within the confining and disabling structures of patriarchal power and authority." Aidan Dunne, The Irish Times, June 2017
Leisure with Dignity (2017) is part of the Arts Council Collection
