There has been a surge of interest in the Quaker Burial Ground at Ballitore since a wonderful celebration of the 200th Anniversary of Mary Leadbeater on the 27th of June this year.
Mary Shackleton-Leadbeater wrote the 'Annals of Ballitore' -- a diary of people's lives and events in and around Ballitore from 1766 to 1824 -- you will see where Mary is buried and graves of the grandparents of Antarctic Explorer, Ernest Shackleton and early Quaker settler of Ballitore, Abel Strettel.
Five years ago the Ballitore Burial Ground was in the words of a google reviewer, 'overgrown and sad-looking'. Heritage is indeed at risk and the Ballitore Burial Ground Restoration Group is doing its best to mitigate that risk. There is a new sign at the entrance gates and school tours of the burial ground have taken place.
Again this year we are offering free guided tours on both Saturdays of Heritage Week.
Tours last 40-50 minutes and are led by a qualified guide and historian. Group sizes are limited. To book, text 'Quaker Burial Ground' to 0872421249.
If weather is damp or wet wellington boots are recommended as you cross a meadow of long grass to access the burial ground.
