Join us at the GPO Museum as we explore the foundations of modern Ireland in this guided tour delving into the cultural, social, and political elements that came together in the twentieth century and led to the formation of the two states on the island.
Beginning with the Cultural Revival of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this tour will follow the developments that culminated in the 1916 Easter Rising. Following that, the subsequent War of Independence and Civil War that heralded the parallel formation of the twenty-six county Irish Free State alongside Northern Ireland will also be discussed. Such events brought one set of foundations in Ireland crumbling down and paved the way for those of new states, and the legacies of these events continue to influence us today.
Beyond the revolutionary period, the tour will examine parallel the social and constitutional developments on both sides of the Irish border up to the 1998 Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement, and how the foundations of our island continue to shift as time goes on and new developments, be they cultural, economic, social, constitutional, or others, emerge.
This tour will last approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, and patrons are welcome to further explore the museum at their own pace following the tour's conclusion.
Bookings are limited to two tickets per booking. Bookings are to be made via info@gpomuseum.ie
