Preserving Charles Bianconi’s Heritage and History.

The Bianconi Mortuary Chapel in Boherlahan will be open to the public on the 15th and 22nd August. An exhibition will outline Charles Bianconi's life and times and the story behind the construction of the Chapel. Benzoni's marble funerary memorial to Catherine Bianconi, a sister monument to Daniel O'Connell's in the Irish College in Rome, is the most prominent feature of the Chapel. Johnny Fogarty’s beautifully crafted model of the Mortuary Chapel will be on view. Correspondence and memorabilia relating to Bianconi will be exhibited, alongside reminders of past commemorations and other items of interest. An Architectural Heritage Report was prepared in 2024, and preservation work is continuing. Photos of the restoration to date will be another attraction.

Visitors will see, at the front of Bianconi Park, the newly erected plaque which was unveiled in September 2025 by the Italian Ambassador to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Bianconi. Also, along the south wall of the park are the terracotta Stations of the Cross which Bianconi commissioned and imported from Italy.

A visit is planned on Monday 17th August to Silversprings House in Clonmel, where Bianconi once lived.

During the week, two public lectures will be given in St John's Church in Ardmayle.
On Tuesday 18th August, Conservation Architect Karol O'Mahony will speak about the features and restoration of the Bianconi Chapel.
On Friday 21st August, Pat Wallace, former Director of the National Museum of Ireland will give a talk on the career of Charles Bianconi.
