Place Names of Clonmany

15 August, 12:30pm - 1pm

  • The Market House
  • Clonmany
  • Co. Donegal

During the 1960s a Christian Brother from Sligo called Brother Tom Connolly who was studying at Queen's University began the extraordinary task of recording the place names of Clonmany Parish in Inishowen. Fortunately, he managed to meet the last native Irish speakers in the Parish and save the names from extinction. His collection records hundreds of place names within the 28 townlands of the Parish and includes the Irish, English translation and phonetics. Before Brother Connolly's death he expressed a wish to see his project completed.

Archaeologist and Urris native Rosemarie Doherty of Lands of Eogain will discuss how the project is progressing and how locals might contribute in the future.
