Ogham Stones of County Mayo Exhibition

There are 12 recorded ogham stones from Mayo. An ogham stone is typically a standing stone, with an inscription in the ogham script, usually located on the edge or angle of the stone. This script or writing system was created sometime before the 5th century AD to represent the sounds of an early form of the Irish language and used initially to carve short inscriptions on stone.

Mayo County Council Heritage Office has undertaken a Mayo Ogham Stone Project, to achieve greater access to, awareness of and engagement with Mayo’s ogham stones, including through 3D recording and 2D etchings. The project was co-ordinated by Dr Nora White and supported by The Heritage Council. The stones were recorded in collaboration with Digital Heritage Age. Artist John Flynn enhanced the 3D models and produced detailed stipple art, revealing carved stone and hidden features. John’s artwork is featured in this exhibition.
