Newcastle Castle
Newcastle Royal Castle holds a remarkable place in medieval Irish history. Once among the strongest fortresses in Ireland during the late 1200s, it served as a strategic frontier outpost, playing a key role in efforts to subdue the rebellious Irish in the Wicklow Mountains. The surviving remains of its large gatehouse—remodelled in the 16th century—hint at the scale and strength of the original fortifications. Historical records also note 191 burgages, indicating the presence of a substantial, though now lost, settlement associated with the castle.
In 2025, urgent conservation works will begin to address structural deterioration and strengthen the castle against the growing impacts of climate change. This event will explore the fascinating history of Newcastle Royal Castle, from its medieval origins to its strategic importance, and present the planned conservation measures designed to safeguard it for future generations.
The Wicklow Community Archaeology Project will present this event, funded by The Heritage Council and Wicklow County Council through the County Heritage Plan Fund 2025.
