Natural Plant Dyes Workshop
Join Wilderland artist Joanna Hopkins for a workshop on sourcing and making natural dyes from local plants.
We’re celebrating heritage week at North Mayo Heritage Centre with an afternoon workshop all about natural plant dyes, where participants will learn how to gather, chop, simmer and dye with local plant materials for dying fabric.
We’ll start with a short guided walk to gather plants for our workshop, where we’ll learn how to identity and safely collect native and non-native, invasive plant species. In the studio Joanna will show us how to prepare and process plant materials for making natural dyes, and we’ll create a selection of fabric dyes to test.
We’ll also be gathering local stories and folklore about plants, and participants are invited to share these in the workshop. Participants will be contributing to creating a temporary artwork for the Wilderland project, and also be able to bring home some dyed fabric samples. All materials supplied.
