Music: History of Ceilis as social gatherings

22 August, 4pm - 5pm

  • Day centre
  • Co. Donegal

This presentation will explore the evolution of the céilí as a central form of social gathering in Irish communities, from informal house gatherings to organised events held in community halls and clubs.

For generations, céilís brought people together through music, dance, storytelling, and shared celebration. In island communities such as Tory Island, house céilís played an important role in strengthening social bonds, passing on traditions, and creating spaces where generations could meet.

The talk will examine how these intimate gatherings gradually moved into larger organised settings, reflecting wider social changes while preserving the essential spirit of the céilí: community, connection, and the joy of making music and dancing together.
