The Dublin Port millstone wreck and millstone production, usage and context in post-medieval Ireland

In 2017 Rex Bangerter of the Archaeological Diving Company Ltd (ADCO) discovered an 18th-century shipwreck in Dublin Port which included two millstones in its cargo. In this lecture Dr Niall Colfer will analyse these millstones and provide a wider discussion concerning millstone geology, transport, typology and production techniques.

Millstone production reached its zenith in 18th and 19th-century Ireland, with indigenous examples widely used in mills in Dublin and throughout the country. The reasons for the rise and ultimate fall of this long-forgotten industry will be discussed.
