This talk will discuss how oral history can be used to enhance heritage work including genealogy, family history and local history in the local and wider community. It will also explore how oral history is a foundation for the local customs and traditions in a particular area and how this foundation shapes a local community.
The talk will give the audience the basics of oral history tenets including techniques for gathering oral history through questionnaires, interviews, specific topics and the inclusion of community voices that may not have been previously heard. There will be some examples of oral history including the Schools’ Folklore Collection, Cuimhneach an Chláir and the importance of these two initiatives for local communities.
