Mass at Laught Penal Church Site

The church in Laught/ Templemoyle is remembered locally as “The Penal Church”. Local tradition has always associated this church with Penal times as it was an ideal location site for mass, secluded and hidden behind a hill. We can almost be sure mass was often celebrated here during these times of persecution.

A recent archaeological survey states that the area, in which the Church is situated, contains a cluster of recorded monuments/similar sites- Ballaun Stone, enclosure and well. It has been suggested that these monuments maybe remains of a large medieval ecclesiastical foundation linked with a branch of the Franciscan Community at Killtullagh, Kilkerrin and Cloonkeenkerril.

A special Heritage Week Mass will take place at Laught Penal church site on Thursday 21st August at 7pm.
