Lough Corrib Environmental Clean-Up

Oughterard Tidy Towns invites the community to join a large-scale clean-up of Lough Corrib, with the ambitious goal of removing 300 tyres from the lakebed and shoreline. Abandoned tyres pose a serious threat to water quality, fish habitats, and the natural beauty of one of Ireland's largest and most ecologically important lakes.

Volunteers will work together using boats, waders, and safety equipment to retrieve tyres from the water and along the banks near Oughterard. The event highlights the ongoing pressures facing Lough Corrib's natural heritage and demonstrates practical community action to protect it for future generations.

All participants will be briefed on safety procedures before the clean-up begins. Appropriate clothing (waterproof gear, gloves, sturdy footwear) is recommended. Collected tyres will be gathered for proper disposal and recycling afterwards.

This event is part of Oughterard Tidy Towns' ongoing commitment to protecting Lough Corrib's water quality and natural environment, and ties in with National Heritage Week's 2026 theme of "Heritage at Risk" — reflecting the real threats facing our waterways today.
