West Clare's Heritage at Risk: short documentary film double bill

As part of its 2026 National Heritage Week programme, Kilrush and District Historical Society (KDHS) invites you to a double bill of local short documentary films, each lasting around 25 minutes.

The first film is THE MUSEUM THAT JOE BUILT, made by a team led by Dan Tighe of Green Street Arts. It tells the story of The Museum of Irish Rural Life in Kilrush and the man behind it, Joe Whelan.

The second film is THE MUD HOUSE AT JOHNNIE MAC'S CROSS: A STORY FROM A DISAPPEARING LANDSCAPE, made by Tony Whelan of Canola Pictures. While telling the story of the ultimately unsuccessful efforts of local activists to save one of the last mud-built houses in County Clare in the face of a road-widening scheme, this short film documents the physical, written and oral history of the house and its inhabitants over several centuries.

The film show starts at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday 22 August 2026 at the Teach Ceoil in Kilrush (corner of Moore Street and Grace Street/Crawford Street).

Free. No booking required. Come along and learn how local volunteers can (and do) rescue and document Heritage at Risk in West Clare and elsewhere.

KDHS welcomes new members. Membership forms will be available on the night.
