Patchwork and quilting was introduced into Ireland by the English during the 18th century. It was taught to those in service who quickly passed on the skills to their family and community. Those with wealth used more luxury and expensive fabrics in their craft while those of lesser means used utility and affordable fabrics. Resourcefulness was the key to the spread of patchwork and quilting in Ireland.
Patchwork and quilting is and was mainly created by women. The creativity and resourcefulness used to take small pieces of fabric and make a useful and functional item is the unique way many left their story for their family and future generations.

This display by the Newcastle Crafters is a wonderful testament to their creative community. Each piece has been lovingly made and created by the women in the groups that meet in the centre. They make and create for pleasure and gifting to family, friends and charity. Each piece has its own story and we celebrate the maker and their skill.
