Liberties: Streets, Stories and Public Spaces

Join local community group Trees for Tenters for an informal guided walk exploring the changing streets, parks and public spaces of Dublin’s historic Liberties.
Beginning on the Coombe at the corner of Francis Street, we will visit St Luke’s Park before continuing to Newmarket, where we will consider how its current redevelopment compares with earlier plans. We will also explore the potential of a vacant site at the corner of St Luke’s Avenue and Brabazon Place, before finishing at Weaver Park, now an important green space for the local community.
Along the way, we will uncover some of the area’s planning history, including the creation of St Luke’s Avenue the result of more than fifty years of debate about how traffic from Crumlin and Drimnagh should enter Dublin’s south-west inner city.
The walk will consider what has been gained, lost and put at risk as the Liberties has evolved. We will also look at how local communities can help protect the area’s heritage while creating a greener, healthier and more liveable neighbourhood for the future.
No specialist knowledge is needed. This will be a leisurely and informal walk, with opportunities for conversation along the way.
We will be walking on paved surfaces, where there are steps there is ramped access nearby.
