St. Brigid's Holy Well Pilgrimage, Greaghnafarna, Co. Leitrim

The Leitrim Community Holy Wells Project (2026) is a community heritage initiative, funded by Leitrim County Council and co-ordinated by Archaeology Plan to research Holy Wells across Co. Leitrim.

Prepare to be immersed in Leitrim’s pristine nature and rich cultural heritage. You are invited to explore and reimagine Leitrim’s Holy Well tradition by joining Archaeologist Alva Mac Gowan and historian John Cronin for a guided pilgrimage to St. Brigid's Well which is located in the townland of Greaghnafarna, Co. Leitrim.

Learn about Leitrim’s holy well tradition, the story behind their origins, names, associated rituals and healing and folklore.

Do you have a Holy Well story to share?

Perhaps you’d like to continue the ancient practice of adding a stone to the pilgrim’s cairn?

Whatever your religious/spiritual persuasion - all are most welcome!

The guided walk will start at the front gate of St. Hugh’s Catholic Church, Drumnafinnila, Ballinagleragh, Co. Leitrim, where you will follow the ancient pilgrimage route along an old country lane to St. Brigid’s Well.

The walk is roughly 2km (there and back).

Rain jackets, walking shoes/ wellies are recommended.
