Launch of Cúig Chrann Dúchasach

Tidy Towns Malahide's latest project 'Cúig Chrann Dúchasach' is the establishment of five native trees in beautiful Corten Steel pots at the historical Malahide Library.

Funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht through Pobal, the trees have been decorated with their ancient Ogham letter and a QR code brings the visitor through the myths, legends and folklore associated with each tree. It includes medicinal remedies made from the tree and the historical fines should someone dare to remove them! Which tree can protect you from fairies, which one can give you wisdom and how can you stop your child growing?!

Inspired and informed by the book 'Irish Trees, Myths, Legends & Folklore' by the legendary Niall Mac Coiter, this project introduces the visitor to the ancient Irish culture and the Brehon laws that governed it. It aspires to bring back appreciation and respect for our, once common, heritage trees at a time when our natural, native irish landscapes is threatened with extinction.

Tidy Towns Malahide has been active in Malahide for over 40 years. Heidi Bedell, who conceived this project, has been a member of Tidy Towns for nearly 30 years, and claims she still enjoys it!
