Coats of arms originated in the need for identification on the medieval battlefield, and came to Ireland with the Normans. Though strictly personal, they were inherited through many generations in some very old families, while the custom of granting new heraldic devices has continued to this day. Their story is preserved in monuments, stained glass, manuscripts and seals and can throw much light on genealogy and other fields of historical research.

Gerard Crotty is a retired teacher who has been interested in heraldry for many years. He has written and lectured widely on the subject. His twenty-eight part series ‘Heraldry in Ireland’ appeared in Irish Roots magazine from 1997 to 2003.

On street parking available. Restrooms available in adjacent Adair Hall.
