
Ireland in the 1960s: An Overview

This lecture will give students a whistle stop introduction to the history of the 1960s in Ireland. It will cover topics ranging from Sean Lemass' election as Taoiseach to John F Kennedy's visit to Ireland in 1963. It will focus in closely on developments in popular and youth culture during the decade. Students will learn about the introduction of Telefís Éireann and the rise of the showbands and the folk scene. From Lemass to Dickie Rock students will get a sneak peak into the history of this transformative decade.
