Step inside one of Sligo’s longstanding community buildings, 1820 - 2026 and discover the rich history, heritage and social importance of the Avalon Centre. As part of National Heritage Week, the Avalon Centre will host an open day on Saturday 16 August, inviting members of the public to explore the building and learn about its development over the generations.

Visitors will be guided through the centre and given an overview of the building’s history, architectural features and its evolving role within the local community. The tour will highlight the heritage of the structure, including original features, construction methods and the importance of preserving historic buildings for future generations.

The event will also explore how the building has adapted to meet changing community needs over time, from its original purpose to its current role as a vibrant intergenerational community hub. Participants will hear stories connected with the building and gain an insight into the many services, activities and community initiatives that now take place within its walls.

This open day provides an opportunity for local residents, former users, heritage enthusiasts and visitors to connect with an important part of Sligo’s built and social heritage. The event will encourage discussion, memory sharing and a greater appreciation of the value of protecting and celebrating our local heritage.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. The event is suitable for people of all ages and aims to foster a deeper understanding of the Avalon Centre’s past, present and future within the community.
