Heritage Steam & Diesel Trains at the Stradbally Woodland Railway

All aboard for a journey back in time at the Stradbally Woodland Railway!

The oldest volunteer-run railway on the island of Ireland will be operating our 1952 ESB diesel engine Rusty on our passenger train, parts of which date back to the 19th century, from 11am-12pm before our 1949 Bord na Móna steam engine Róisín takes over until 4pm.

The railway is 1km long and runs in a loop through the mature woods of the historic Cosby family estate with each journey taking approximately 10 minutes.

Tickets are valid all day for unlimited trips and are just €4 for a child, €8 for an adult and €20 for a family (two adults, two children). Book online at our website now or pay on the day with card or cash.

It's the perfect opportunity to get to a glimpse into a time gone by and our friendly volunteers will be on hand between trips to answer as many questions as you can think of - you might even get the chance to sound the steam whistle!

Other historic locos and wagons you can learn about will also be on display.
Our volunteers passionately maintain these unique examples of Irish industrial heritage, machines that once helped keep the lights on in countless homes while working on the bogs of the Midlands.

With Bord na Móna marking its 80th anniversary this year, we are delighted to be able to demonstrate how these machines operated and preserve them for many years to come.

Our Steamin Brews Cafe will be open serving snacks, toasties and hot and cold drinks. Enjoy our beautiful woodland setting from the picnic benches dotted around the station in between your unlimited trains rides.

The train is wheelchair accessible. The Stradbally Woodland Railway has been in operation since 1969 and is part of the Irish Steam Preservation Society.

The society's volunteers also organise the annual National Steam Rally in Stradbally, Co Laois.
