Heritage at Risk: Discovering the Ballyteige Buffer Zone

Join the Kilmore Quay Conservation Group for a free drop-in Community Discovery Stand exploring the hidden natural heritage of the Ballyteige Burrow SAC buffer zone.

Located beside The Cutting in Kilmore Quay, this informal event will showcase the wildlife, habitats and ecological importance of the buffer zone surrounding one of Ireland's most important coastal Special Areas of Conservation.

Funded by the Heritage Council's Community Heritage Grant Scheme, an ongoing ecological survey is documenting this important wildlife corridor for the first time. Visitors can view wildlife photographs, habitat maps and displays, pick up a free information leaflet summarising the early findings of the survey, and chat with members of the project team about why buffer zones are vital for protecting biodiversity and strengthening climate resilience.

This event supports the 2026 National Heritage Week theme, "Heritage at Risk," by highlighting an important natural landscape that has remained largely undocumented despite its role in supporting protected habitats and species.

The Community Discovery Stand will also launch a week-long online series on the Kilmore Quay Conservation Group Facebook page. Throughout National Heritage Week, daily posts will share wildlife photographs, species highlights and early findings from the ongoing survey, helping a wider audience discover and appreciate the natural heritage of the Ballyteige Burrow buffer zone.
