Heritage and Nature Day on Knockirr Bog

Following our successful heritage week event last year we're returning with a similar event including a few new additions this year. The activities on the day are listed below and are drawn from the rich natural, cultural and built heritage in and around our local bog.

Solitary Bee and Bird Workshop (1:30-3:30pm)
Rory Finnegan will present “The Secret Life of Bees” after which participants can handle cocoons and observe larvae, followed by a walk on the bog to identify bees and any bird species observed on the day.

Launch of our new ‘tea hut’ structure (4pm)
We were kindly donated a prototype outdoor structure which we’ve installed on the bog and will officially launch on the day.

Hand cutting turf demonstration (2-5pm)
Local turfcutters will demonstrate hand cut turf and attendees will be able to try their hand with the slean.

Medieval norman memorabilia & tour of Carbury Castle (2-5pm)
Ger Mangan (a qualified National Tour Guide) will showcase his collection of medieval norman memorabhila and later bring it to life during a tour of Carbury Castle.

Showcase of archival images relating to the bog (2-5pm)
Brian Dempsey will showcase his collection of archival images relating to local life around the bog over the last 100 years.

End of harvest community picnic (2-5pm)

Tour of Carbury Castle with Ger Mangan (5:30pm)

Community picnic funded by Knockirr / Carbury Bog Trust. All other activities kindly funded by The Heritage Council.
