‘A Compelling Case to Restore Christ Church Fermoy - How Old Walls Work’

This talk will explore the history of restoring Castletownroche Church (which Tony led), reflecting on its significance within the village and its historic setting. It will also consider the prominence of Christ Church, Fermoy and the responsibility we share in preserving this iconic landmark for future generations.

The presentation will explain in layman’s language the roles of the architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers, conservation specialists, contractors, and other professionals involved in delivering a restoration project of this scale. It will discuss the challenges of conserving historic buildings and why such projects are often lengthy and costly, while demonstrating the lasting cultural, social, and community value they provide.

Tony, will explain ‘How Old Walls Work’ and share his considerable experience in helping communities understand the fundamentals of undertaking significant restoration projects.

Tony Fitzgerald, a graduate of University College, Cork with a Bachelor of Engineering (1999). Tony has over 27 years’ experience in the built environment, working on both the contractor and consultancy sides of the construction industry. Since founding OCFPM in 2009, he has established additional businesses in construction, architecture, and development. Today, these businesses employ more than 110 experienced professionals, based in Charleville and delivering projects throughout Ireland.

The lecture will include a walk both inside and outside the building to help the audience understand the issues.
