Hands-on Traditional Irish Crafts Day

15 August, 11am - 3pm

  • Dun Na Si Amenity & Heritage Park
  • Moate, Westmeath
  • N37 P271
  • Co. Westmeath

The National Heritage Day event, for Dun Na Si Amenity park ‘26 will focus on delivering an accessible, interactive demonstration and workshop, for the purpose of safeguarding traditional Irish rural craft skills that are increasingly under threat of disappearing due to a decline in opportunities for intergenerational learning.

The central demonstration will showcase the weaving of a traditional Irish Donkey Creel, a once-essential handwoven carrying basket used in rural Ireland. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the full process, learn about the history and regional significance of creel-making, and engage directly with experienced craftspeople about the materials, techniques, and rural heritage associated with the craft. The Dun Na Si Amenity Park is a perfect place for this demonstration as it holds a collection of Irish Heritage baskets.

Alongside the demonstration, we will host an open public workshop for visitors of the park. Participants of all ages will be invited to take part in hands-on heritage activities including:
- St. Brigid’s Cross making from locally gathered rushes
- Willow weaving (bird feeder)

The event aims to:
Preserve and promote endangered Irish heritage crafts,
Encourage public participation in traditional making skills,
Foster intergenerational knowledge sharing,
Increase awareness of Ireland’s intangible cultural heritage.

The workshop will provide an accessible and inclusive environment where visitors can experience living heritage through practical participation. Engaging directly with traditional craft processes, attendees will gain a deeper appreciation of the importance of protecting and sustaining Ireland’s cultural traditions for future generations.
