Griese? What's in a name.

The River Greese (also spelled Griese; Irish An Ghrís) is a small fast flowing river in Ballitore and is a tributary of the River Barrow. Our youth theatre founded in 1999 is called after this river. The name causes much consternation and confusion as to whether we are called after Grease the musical or Grease paint. We believe that place names are an important part of our heritage and knowledge connects us. For Heritage Week 2025, we will hold a workshop using story and art to highlight the importance of the river to the young people in the area. The workshop will also highlight the role of the river in the mills in the village, Crookstown Corn Mill and Ballitore Mill (flour). The art work will depict the journey of the river. The event will also include walking the young people to both mills with a environmental treasure hunt and conclude with a picnic on the river bank.
The workshop will aim to familiarise young people with their surroundings and build an appreciation of history and heritage.

The event is for young people aged 8 to 12 year olds.
