An illustrated talk on the history of Ireland’s first non-denominational burial ground.
Following the Reformation, Catholics in Ireland were not permitted to operate Catholic cemeteries. While they could be buried for a considerable fee in the graveyards of the state (Anglican) religion, Catholic clergy could not officiate. Under the leadership of ‘The Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell, the Catholic Association was formed to bring about reform, resulting in the opening of Ireland’s first post-Reformation non-denominational cemetery at Goldenbridge in 1829.
This talk by local historian, author and poet Liam O’Meara marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell, who was born on 6 August 1775. Liam’s history of Goldenbridge Cemetery was first published in 2018 and it has recently been re-issued with additional material.
