"From Preservation to Progress, 20 years behind us, 20 years ahead"

This event consists of a specialist tour and discussion of previous conservation works undertaken at the Irish Workhouse Centre. We will also discuss our plans for the future. The event will consist of a walk and talk examining the form and function of the central buildings and structures on the campus, looking at the works done to date and will highlight the future conservation requirements of the complex. The presentation will be supplemented by a series of large scale photographs of the buildings and site as it looked prior to 2006 when South East Galway IRD Clg first took on the project. The presentation will also utilise a series of large scale conjectural drawings showing how the Chapel/Dining Hall might function and look like in the future.

A complementary exhibition entitled "Broken Lives" will highlight various pieces from the workhouse that were recovered and preserved on the site over time. Along with the photographic exhibition these original artefacts provide a sense of the challenges we face as as we progress this project into the future. Please note that the upstairs buildings are not accessible to wheelchair users as this is an original nineteenth-century workhouse and does not have lifts.
