This Heritage Week, a window exhibition on Carnew’s Main Street invites visitors to explore the story of a historic shopfront that has been part of the town’s streetscape for generations. Through a series of information boards, the display traces how the shopfront changed over time, how elements were gradually lost, and how its recent reinstatement, supported by the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS), responds to the wider issue of heritage at risk in rural Irish towns.

Traditional shopfronts once defined the character of villages like Carnew, expressing local craftsmanship, materials, and identity. Over time, many have been altered, replaced, or modernised, resulting in the quiet erosion of historic streetscapes. The exhibition uses surviving photographs to show how this particular shopfront evolved, from its early ceramic lettering and distinctive proportions to later adaptations that obscured its original form.

The reinstatement project drew on these historic images to recover key features, including the ceramic lettering, which was digitally recorded and recreated using 3D scanning and enamel printing with hand painted decoration based on the original design. While the process was modest in scale, it demonstrates how small, carefully considered interventions can help safeguard local heritage.

This self guided display encourages passers by to reflect on the value of traditional shopfronts and the role they play in maintaining the identity of towns like Carnew. By looking closely at one building’s story, the exhibition highlights how everyday heritage can be both vulnerable, and worth restoring.
