Forgotten Lives: The Hidden Histories of Belfast City Cemetery

22 August, 2pm - 3:45pm

  • Belfast City Cemetery
  • 511 Falls Road Belfast BT12 6DE
  • Co. Antrim

Belfast City Cemetery contains the history of the Victorian city but what about those laid to rest whose stories have been forgotten and neglected? This walking tour led by historian Dr. Robyn Atcheson focuses on the stories of women, the poor and the marginalised in society. Participants will visit lesser-known graves & reflect on the risk of letting these stories lie neglected.

Uncover why the largest part of the cemetery was unmarked for over 150 years.
Explore whose stories are told and whose are forgotten. Discover what the lives of those laid to rest can tell us about Victorian and Edwardian society.

Dr. Robyn Atcheson is a social historian of nineteenth-century Belfast who has specially curated this tour based on her research into the lives of the poor and neglected.
This walking tour lasts 90 minutes, conducted on paths with some walking on grass. This is an outdoor tour and will be suitable for adults & secondary-school aged children with parental discretion.
