Hangings and Hangmen at Kilmainham Gaol

Kilmainham Gaol operated as the county gaol for Dublin from 1796 to 1910. Over those 114 years the Gaol witnessed more than 170 executions. Most were public hangings, 11 prisoners were hanged within the prison walls. This guided tour is an opportunity to explore how Kilmainham Gaol adapted to changes in capital punishment laws throughout the 19th century. Hear stories of some of the condemned prisoners held in the Gaol, those who were executed and the few who successfully evaded the hangman's noose. The guided tour will also look at the executioners, often referred to as the "Finishers of the Law", and the locations in the Gaol where they plied their trade.

This tour is not suitable for visitors under the age of 18. Booking required via the link below. Tickets will be able available from 10am on Wednesday 30th July.

This guided tour may not be suitable for visitors with mobility issues as it includes a number of steps/stairs and uneven floor/ground surfaces.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour begins. Unfortunately, latecomers cannot be accommodated. Part of the tour is outdoors. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
