Fermoy's Secret Gardens, Co. Cork Presents Open Days for Heritage Week

Richmond House, which is home to Fermoy’s Secret Garden, is steeped in history and holds a place in the heart of many of the town’s residents.

Richmond House was built in the Italianate style in 1837 by a family of millers named Smyth and so falls into the late Georgian/Regency Period. Nearby Ballyvolane House (Castlelyons) has very similar features and this points to the likelihood that the same architect Richard Rolt Brash designed both, though Richmond has the enviable Bath Stone to the exterior. It has borne witness to difficult and bloody times in Irish history and the burning of the British barracks by IRA irregulars would have been visible from the property back in 1922.

Both house and gardens are dear to many of Fermoy’s locals who have fond memories of visiting the garden whilst attending Presentation Primary School in their childhood.

The gardens are open from 10 am to 2 pm with a pop-up café on site on Saturday, 15th and Sunday, 16th.
