A commemorative plaque will be unveiled at the birthplace of Father Kenneth Monaghan in Rathcormac, County Sligo. Born Michael Monaghan in 1893, he served in the British Army during the Great War, was captured and imprisoned by the Germans and, later, served in the Allies' North Russia campaign where he was again captured, this time by the Bolsheviks. Upon release and return home, he joined the Passionate Order and was ordained as Father Kenneth in 1929. Assigned to Paris during WWII, he was involved in Resistance activities to include assisting allied airmen, as well as Jews, to escape. After the war, he served as a British Army chaplain before returning to his Order. He visited Sligo regularly until he died in 1969. The unveiling ceremony will include a short talk about his life.
