Exploring Our Foundations - Aunt Pat's War
Join the author and the Museum of Childhood Ireland for Exploring Our Foundations at 12-1 pm, a reading from June Nelson's book Aunt Pat’s War, followed by a Q & A. Her novel is an extraordinary true story of courage, resilience, and the quiet heroism that can grow from the most unlikely beginnings. At just 11 years old, Winifred “Pat” left her rural family home in County Laois, Ireland, to begin an unimaginable journey, one that would take her across the Irish Sea, through the streets of London and Paris, and finally to a boarding school in Belgium. It was 1911, and she was completely alone. Through vivid detail, the book traces Pat’s early years—her fear, wonder, and sheer determination as she faced the unfamiliar noise and bustle of the outside world. From being outfitted for school near the Tower of London to arriving at a school where she didn’t know the language or a single soul, Pat met every challenge with quiet grit. Her courage never left her. Decades later, during World War II in occupied Paris, Pat risked her life as a member of the French Resistance, sheltering British and American airmen, helping them escape capture. Her bravery was later honoured with an MBE. Aunt Pat’s War is a powerful testament to how early opportunities and inner strength can shape a life of purpose. It is a story that reminds us how one small girl from rural Ireland helped change the course of history. No booking required.
