
Exploring Ballinasloe's Water Heritage
Join us in Ballinasloe Library for a very special event comprising of a talk and tour centered around Ballinasloe Town's water heritage.
Janet Laffey is the Community Water Officer for the Local Authority Waters Program (LAWPRO). This presentation will focus on the water quality of the Upper Shannon area, the pressures on water quality, and how communities can contribute to positive change.
Michael Riddell is a qualified regional Tour Guide specialising in personalised tours of the Battlefield at Aughrim and the east Galway Region. This walking tour will focus on Ballinasloe's substantial water-related heritage.
Suitable footwear and clothing is required for the walking tour which will take place outdoors.
Situated on the River Suck, and formerly a terminus of the Grand Canal, water features heavily in Ballinasloe's history. The Canal basin was a hub of industry within living memory, and even the pathways and bridges across the river provide an insight into the town's history.
