Estuary Watch: Two Shores, One Estuary
Join the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group for Estuary Watch: Two Shores, One Estuary, a community wildlife-watching event celebrating the natural and cultural heritage of the Shannon Estuary.
The Shannon Estuary is one of Ireland’s most remarkable coastal landscapes and is protected as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). It is home to Ireland’s only resident population of bottlenose dolphins, as well as seabirds, otters, salmon, lamprey and a rich variety of coastal habitats.
During the event, IWDG officers and volunteers will lead a series of watch points on both the Clare and Kerry shores of the estuary, inviting people to discover the wildlife, history and maritime heritage that connect communities across this unique landscape. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet IWDG officers and local group members, learn about the estuary’s marine and cultural heritage, and use binoculars and spotting scopes to search for dolphins, seabirds and other wildlife.
A special watch point is also planned on Scattery Island, offering a unique opportunity to experience the island’s rich heritage while enjoying views across the estuary.
Suitable outdoor clothing and footwear are recommended. Final watch point locations and event timings will be announced closer to the event date through IWDG channels and the Heritage Week website.
Please note that the Scattery Island watch point is accessible by ferry only. Ferry tickets must be purchased separately, fees apply, and advance booking is recommended.
