Ellen Hutchins: Archives at Ballylickey

An opportunity to find out more about Ellen from one of her relatives / researchers – Madeline Hutchins. An informal drop-in event, with information to browse, archives (books and letters) on display and your questions answered.

Ellen (1785-1815) botanist and botanical artist, lived almost all of her short life in Ballylickey and this is where she pressed plants, made her specimens and drawings and wrote her letters. Come to Ballylickey, to the lovely Manning’s Emporium, for an opportunity to find out more about Ellen from her relative / researcher, Madeline Hutchins, Ellen’s great-great-grandniece. Also on hand to talk about Ellen from her research into her will be Leah C Stetson, Interdisciplinary PhD Candidate, University of Maine (US) and Visiting Researcher Student UCC.

Come for brunch, elevenses or lunch as well!

See a selection of Ellen’s letters to her brothers about botany and books that she owned on a range of subjects from botany to poetry. Some books have the remains of pressed plants between their pages. See botany books and illustrations of the period that we know that Ellen used. Read extracts of her letters.

A free drop-in event – buy your own food and drinks.

The Ellen Hutchins Archives Cabinet is in Bantry Library during the Ellen Hutchins Festival with a selection of archives including one of her drawings and three of her specimens. There is a small table top display of material related to Ellen, with photographs of some of her drawings and specimens.
