"Echoes of St. Manchan and his Mother Mella" Lemanaghan

Join us for a guided walk along the old pilgrim routes of St. Manchan, travelling through landscapes shaped by centuries of human footsteps and the slow, patient formation of peat. Just as each layer of peat holds the memory of a time long past, these routes carry the stories of the people who lived beside the bog, worked its surface, and crossed it in search of spiritual refuge.

Deep within the peatlands lie traces of generations who depended on these environments for survival. Corridors were carved through the bog, connecting communities to the mineral islands that rose like safe havens from the surrounding peat. These pathways reveal how people moved, lived, prayed, and persevered in a landscape that demanded respect and understanding.

Today, we walk these routes at a moment when our wildlife is being pushed out, squeezed into ever‑smaller spaces with fewer places to survive. The peatlands that once sheltered life—human and animal alike—are under pressure, and the stories held within their layers risk being lost.

This event invites participants to reconnect with the land, to honour the footsteps of those who came before, and to reflect on the urgent need to protect and rehabilitate our peatlands so they can once again become thriving sanctuaries for wildlife and living archives of our shared heritage.
