Display of Aran Knitting, Clones Lace & St Brigid's Crosses

A display of traditional Irish crafts brings together the warmth, delicacy and symbolism of handmade heritage. Aran knitwear is arranged to show its raised cables, diamonds and honeycomb textures, evoking the practical wool garments associated with the Aran Islands. Clones lace offers a striking contrast: fine white crochet motifs of flowers and leaves are joined with the distinctive Clones knot, reflecting a craft that grew into an art form of remarkable skill. Completing the display are St Brigid’s crosses, woven from straw into four-armed forms with square centres, traditionally made around St Brigid’s Day and hung for blessing and protection.

Together, the three crafts create a rich visual story of Irish cultural heritage and the beauty of working natural materials by hand. Meet the maker of the display pieces on Monday 17th, Wednesday 19th & Friday 21st August.
