Discover the Rich Heritage of Inchcleraun Island

To celebrate Longford Heritage Week 2026, Lough Ree Access for All will host a special boat and walking tour to the storied island of Inchcleraun on Lough Ree, departing from our centre in Ballyleague.

Guests will travel aboard our three boats to Inchcleraun, where they will disembark for a guided walking tour led by local farmer and island custodian, Herbert Farrell. As you explore the island, you will see the remains of former houses and the evocative ruins of early monasteries that once made this a thriving spiritual centre.

The tour invites you to step into the world of ancient Irish mythology, with stories of Queen Meave, the legendary warrior queen. Inchcleraun is said to be her final resting place, and the island is steeped in tales of power, ambition, and the epic conflicts of the Ulster Cycle.

You will also learn about St Diarmuid, who founded a monastery here in the 6th century, and view the remains of six ancient churches that stand as a powerful reminder of centuries of devotion. The island’s story continues into more recent times with the Society of Friends (Quakers), whose values of simplicity, peace, and community left a quiet but lasting mark on Inchcleraun.

After the walking tour, participants will return by boat to Ballyleague, arriving back at the centre at approximately 1:30pm.

A suggested donation of €15 is appreciated in place of an admission fee
