Bell 1

Demonstration of Bell-Ringing in Rowe Street Church Belfry

17 August, 6:15pm - 8:15pm

  • Rowe Street Church
  • Rowe St Upper, Townparks, Wexford
  • Y35KX66
  • Co. Wexford

Climb the historic Rowe Street bell tower and witness a demonstration of the ancient art of bell-ringing.

The ten beautiful Wexford bells have marked important life events; births, weddings, deaths and other special occasions, both religious and secular in the town for centuries. Usually heard but not seen, passers by look up when they hear the bells but normally have no idea that there are people in the tower actually pulling the ropes.

Visitors will be welcomed at the entrance and guided up the narrow spiral staircase to the tower where they will be invited to sit and listen while the ringers demonstrate how it all happens. The bells themselves are further up the tower and separate from the ringing chamber. Expect to spend approximately 15 minutes in the tower.

Due to the fact that space in the ringing chamber is quite limited with the added danger of moving ropes, this event will not be suitable for children.
