As part of the John Broderick Emerging Writing Award received in 2024, poet Jackie Gorman has written a sequence of poems about Connaught Street in Athlone.
This sequence of poems is now published by the Factory and copies of the booklet are available free of charge at Athlone Library during Heritage Week. This publication is supported by Creative Ireland.
The poems span from before the street existed to the present day, taking in everything from fossils to Jacobites, revolutionaries and changing landscapes along the way. As the geographer Alistair Bonnett has observed "place is the fabric of our lives, memory and identity are stitched through it."
