24 August, 4pm - 6pm

Join local guide Vincent O’Sullivan for an inspiring walk through the ancient hazel coppice of Cullohill Mountain, leading to the sacred Comer Well.

Cullohill is an ancient managed landscape where our ancestors gathered hazelnuts and tended the hazel trees — a valuable resource for building, with hazel forming a vital part of material culture reflected in the landscape. As we walk, Vincent will share insights into the traditions and folklore of Cullohill mountain including the use of hazel for divining.

Over the last number of years, the Acorn Project has collaborated with farmer Vincent O’Sullivan in collecting seeds for our native tree nursery. These trees will be planted as part of Fite Fuaite to establish new hazel coppices across the catchment.

This event marks the launch of the Fite Fuaite : Interwoven Landscapes Project, supported by the DAFM Forestry Promotion Scheme. The project explores the ancient practice of hazel coppicing and its place in Ireland’s rich material woodland culture. We will collaborate with architect Joseph Mackey and landowner Vincent O 'Sullivan to create a hazel structure using hazel and traditional building techniques.

Come walk with us, step into the past, and learn how ancient wisdom of the hazel can inspire sustainable forestry practices today.

This is a walk steep in parts lasting approx 2 hrs described as moderate, average fitness. Sturdy walking shoes, water, raingear.
