Beyond the Lake, Beneath the Fen with Kate Flood and Elena Aitova

Join us for a relaxed and engaging gathering exploring the relationships between local flora, traditions, fens and farming around Lough Sewdy.

We will begin by travelling back in time through the landscape using a peat core, exploring the depth of the peat deposits in this rare fen habitat, discovering how water moves through the fen and learning about the latest scientific research on these unique wetlands.

We will then explore how the plants growing within the fens of Lough Sewdy have been used through the ages, reflecting on the transition from extractive practices towards more sustainable and regenerative relationships with these landscapes.

The discussion will include the medicinal properties of wetland plants, their traditional and historic uses, and current research into "wet farming" or paludiculture as an innovative approach to farming and habitat conservation.

The gathering will conclude with a creative activity exploring what future fen folklore and cultural practices might look like — new blessings for Lughnasa, rituals and regenerative customs celebrating the plants, stories and ecological heritage of this place.

We will finish with a tea ceremony featuring wild plants and homemade berry cordial.
