Join renowned aquatic scientists Prof. Ken Whelan and Dr. Ross Finlay this Water Heritage Day for a fascinating exploration of the Slaney River’s rich and diverse life. Taking place on the scenic riverbank in Rathvilly, the event will begin with an engaging discussion of the Slaney’s unique ecology, including its internationally important salmon population, the array of other species it supports, and the environmental pressures it faces.

Participants will then enjoy a live invertebrate sampling demonstration, revealing the extraordinary variety of insects and other small creatures that inhabit Ireland’s rivers and streams. You’ll have the chance to see these species up close, hear the stories of their remarkable life cycles, and learn how they play a vital role in maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems.

This is a rare opportunity to connect with one of Ireland’s most iconic rivers and the life it sustains.

This event is hosted by the Slaney River Trust (SRT). Prof. Ken Whelan is a board member of the SRT and Dr Ross Finlay is Project Officer of the SRT.

This event will take place outdoors on a grassy area beside the Slaney River. Appropriate clothing for the weather and suitable outdoor footwear are recommended.
