Portrane's Martello tower was built in 1806, one of 26 built in line of sight of the next. Inspired by a tower in Corsica which withstood siege by British forces.
The decision was made that towers of such strength, the walls being 8ft to 9ft thick should be built along the coast of England and Ireland to defend against maritime invasion by Napoleon.
Now owned by Terry Prone, Portrane's Martello Tower holds over 200 years of history. Explore this hidden gem and hear its story told by Terry herself and Bryan Greene.
