A Tour of Martello Tower Portrane
16 - 24 August, 9am - 5pm
- Martello Tower Portrane
- Tower House , The Quay , Portrane, co. Dublin
- K36 PH93
- Co. Dublin – Fingal
Built in 1806, this tower was one of more than 70 built around the coasts of the UK and Ireland to defend against maritime invasion by Napoleon – an invasion that never happened.
Most of the towers were abandoned to dereliction. This one wasn’t. Initially, it was occupied by a precursor to the Coastguard before coming into private ownership a century ago.
Now, it’s owned by Terry Prone, and open for tours during Heritage Week. Terry conducts as many of the tours as she can - Bryan Greene takes over when she can’t.
Because we’re so much in demand between 16th and 24th of August, and because safety dictates no tour has more than six people, you’ll need to book in advance.
Tours take place no matter how bad is the weather - so bring a raincoat. And wear shoes suited to climbing a spiral staircase. You’re welcome – with minor restrictions – to take photographs.
We can accommodate some cars.
Adults €6
Children are welcome for free, and seniors /students are asked to pay €3.
Tours last about 40 minutes and run hourly.
Entry to the tower is by pressing the bell on the pillar of the gate on the main road.
